I wrote this song almost 2 decades ago, and have peformed it numerous times. Yet as true with all the music I have written, most often they are His love expressed to me personally. In this song, I was grappling with the issues of a life that were pretty much black and white. If I want the blessing, then I must order my life a certain way. If I do not care to discipline myself, then how can I expect the blessing?
More recent, I have come to put it this way: The time to buy a fire extinguisher is not when the building is on fire. And also this goes to issues of legacy. Legacies cannot be built overnight, but take years to form, and can be ruined by one act.
The question remains. Do we want the blessing? If so, then let us live a life that is worthy to be blessed.
Some seek love, from those that cannot love them.
Some seek peace, and security where stronger hearts have failed.
Some seek riches, that always will elude them.
Some seek shelter from a wind that will prevail.
I have seen the ways of man most awkard.
His crown of glory is but of thorn and stone.
He has kept the dross, and cast away the purest gold.
He says "We are many" but he's all alone.
We were never meant to walk in such perplexion.
How can it be that we find but empty cups when our labors we perform?
If we seek the true and rightful, we can run but good will overtake us,
and His covering will keep us safe in the midst of the storm.
Faithfulness and kindness to your families,
will bring the peace that you've been looking for.
Lend a hand to those who are weak and weary.
Keep your eyes on Jesus as you feed the poor.
Pray for those who would hate and despise their fellow man;
praying "Father, forgive them! They know not what they do!"
Let everyone who sees you see that Jesus lives,
Let faith and hope and love, abide in you.
For we were never meant to walk in such perplexion.
How can it be that we find but empty cups when our labors we perform?
If we seek the true and rightful, we can run but good will overtake us,
and His covering will keep us safe in the midst of the storm!
